Bio

Giuseppe Valentino is born 1978. He is a filmmaker and sound designer. He studied in his hometown before moving to Bologna, where he began his first audiovisual experiences related to DAMS (Department of Arts, Music, and Show). He then moved to Zurich for nine years, working as a director of photography and music video director for the Voodoo Rhythm Records label. In 2006, he moved to Cape Town to study English, documentary film-making and cinematography at the Thupelo Institute, where living and attending school in one of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods became a fundamental formative experience. After a brief stay in Mexico, he returned to Italy and made the independent documentary “Noi bruciamo gli Elefanti,” which was presented at the Annecy Film Festival in France. He worked as a freelance director of photography, filming Tre Titoli by Nico Angiuli, which was presented at the Quadriennale in Rome in 2016, and the cinematography for the winning project of the ‘Italian Council’ call, filmed at the Pistoletto Foundation in Biella, The Human Tools.In the summer of 2016, he was an artist in residence at AltoFest Naples, where he created Centogradi, an observational documentary about the last active foundry in the alleys of the Sanità neighborhood. From 2017 to 2019, he studied the bansuri (Indian flute) and Hindustani music (Indian classical music) with Lorenzo Squillari. He founded the production company Ferula Film and produced the feature film Xolo, which was awarded at the Black Star Film Festival and selected at BiF&ST and the 40th Italian Film Festival in Villerupt. In collaboration with Rai Cinema, he produced the observational documentary Senza Tempo, about the remnants of transhumance in southern Italy. In 2019, he worked in Paris and Brussels on the film Annette by Leos Carax, starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard, producing a documentary about the filming: The Making of Annette. He participated as an artist in residence for Matera 2019, producing Chiusi in un cerchio, an audiovisual work on the urbanization of the ‘La Martella’ neighborhood. Since 2022, he has been responsible for the visual aspects of the Verso Sud festival and has collaborated with Teatringestazione on contemporary art projects, transitioning from cinematic direction to performative works. In Timisoara, Romania, he was an artist in residence for Timisoara 2023 European Capital of Culture, creating Open Eyes Beta Dream, a project in collaboration with Teatringestazione. He is currently working on the project SOS Songs of Survival about the Afghan diaspora in Austria and their relationship with music and songs, co-directed with the aid of the city of Vienna. He uses image, sound, and music as his primary expressive tools. Giuseppe Valentino lives in Puglia.
